Black Rain

The cloak of night is on me
Comforting in its envelope.
The gloom helps me mask, for a while,
The pain I nurse within.

Dark purple skies
And faint silhouettes of clouds.
Lightning heralds the distant thunder
The macabre outline of the trees
Ponderous in their movement.
Strong winds blow cold
Bringing the smell of freshly wet earth
Presaging the coming of the rain
And the rain fell
Harder and harder with every passing moment.

Come, black rain, and come hither
Embrace this parched body
Come, pour on me and engulf me
Wash away the pain …the hurt, the hate…
Purge me of the vile and the vicious
The wickedness and maliciousness
Cleanse my body, my heart and mind
Sublimate my soul of all evil and sin
Take away all,
That which is not a part of me,
That which should not be a part of me.

Come quench the ancient fires
That consume me from within,
The blaze of ages,
The flames that never let me die.
Sting me, hurt me, fall hard on me,
Dissolve me into a thousand parts;
Take me away with your flow,
Drown me in that dark nothingness
from whence you spring

Or shall I fall with you,
Abandoning all?
But can I ?
Do I have the courage to ?
Or does it matter all?
For I will be one with you yet
Soon, if not now,
In the not too distant future.

Come, welcome rain
I wait for you to relieve me.
Why don’t you give me
the succor I seek ?
Why don’t you cleanse me
The way you cleanse the earth?
Why cannot I be as fresh and radiant,
So clean and beautiful,
As the lands you leave in your wake?
Why do I remain unchanged and undead,
Even after you have touched me and gone?

Blow me away, ye stout winds,
Carry away this vile creature in me.
Carry me through the skies,
Through the lengths of unending canyons,
To the dark depths of uncharted oceans.
So far, that I can leave behind memory
So deep, that I can no longer feel......

Or say!
Can ye bear me away,
To some distant mountain, wood or valley?
The place of my fondest dreams
In the company of a cherished mate
Where the heart would feel no malady
Except that caused of a surfeit of joy!
Oh, say ye wind and the rain
Will you ever touch me thus?
